November’s collection – vintage adverts

This month I’ve had difficulty choosing what collection to include as I’ve seen so many great examples of marketing communications, but then the nostalgia of vintage advertisements won me over.

If you think there are a lot of rules, laws and regulations about advertising in the 21st century, then perhaps some of these vintage beauties will go some way to explaining why.

Stockings ad from 1950s

“Husbands admire wives who keep their stockings perfect….” And wives admire husbands who judge them on more than their underwear.

Vintage make-up advert

“Catch the eye and win the heart with this natural make-up”. Whatever did we do before make-up?  How did we snag those husbands?

Shocking vintage ad for cocaine

Maybe it was with the use of cocaine drops.

Talking of addictive substances….

Vintage 1950s ad

This ad would still work for me now – those shoes are gorgeous.

As well as promoting sexism and illegal drugs, advertising was also used in the 1950s to communicate safe sex.  Really.

But this has to be my favourite:

Mocked-up 1950s advert for Nintendo Wii

Okay so that last one isn’t entirely genuine, but I love it.  They don’t make them like they used to.
