Facebook has recently introduced a ‘Trending’ section to individual Facebook pages, similar to Twitter’s ‘trending’ panel.
Chris Struhar, Engineering Manager at Facebook, explains: Today we’re announcing Trending, a new product that’s designed to surface interesting and relevant conversations in order to help you discover the best content from all across Facebook.
As with a lot of content on Facebook, the topics listed are customised to the user, so I won’t necessarily see the same trending topics as you – instead I will see topics related to things I’ve expressed an interest in (although today it’s telling me all about Autralia Day and Andy Gray returning to England football commentary…. Not sure Facebook has my profile entirely right there….
One of the biggest differences when compared with Twitter’s trending is that Facebook gives a bit of reason why a topic is trending in a subheading following the headline.
According to Facebook’s help cente:
“Trending shows you the popular topics and hashtags that are being talked about on Facebook. You’ll see stories from people and Pages who’ve shared them with you or have shared them as Public. From the right side of your homepage, click a topic that’s trending to see what people are saying about it.” (Source: Facebook)
